Things you need to know about the 11+
There are three selective schools in North Yorkshire; Ermysted's Grammar School, Skipton Girls' High School and Ripon Grammar School.
To gain access to one of these schools applicants are required to pass a selection test generally known as the 11+ (Eleven Plus).
The Ermysted's Grammar School test consists of two multiple-choice papers, each of approximately 50 minutes in length. The papers assess a candidate’s aptitude in English and mathematics and their ability in verbal and non-verbal reasoning. One paper contains a mixture of questions on mathematics and non-verbal reasoning; the other, a mixture of questions on verbal reasoning and English. Both papers contain timed sections.
The Skipton Girls' High School entrance exam consists of three separate tests in verbal reasoning, mathematics and English. Non-verbal reasoning is not included.
Ripon Grammar School applicants are required to pass a selection test which includes tests of verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, and is time-limited.
All candidates will usually take the tests during the autumn term at the start of year 6. A child can only take a test once in an academic year.
Local primary schools do not prepare pupils for the 11+
It is a common misconception that the standard primary school curriculum will cover all that is required for an able pupil to take and pass the 11+ selection test - this is not the case. The verbal and non-verbal reasoning required by the 11+ test is unlike anything that primary school children have previously experienced and can lead to panic and confusion when encountered for the first time.
How can you improve your child's 11+ performance?
Coaching children in the verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning techniques required can greatly enhance a child's chances of doing well in the 11+ test. I teach my pupils these techniques and work through examples on a one-to-one basis to achieve rapid progress. |
